Why Participate? Why Benchmark?
  • to practice continuous improvement
  • to reduce costs
  • to add value
  • to identify strengths and weaknesses
  • to establish goals and action plans (strategic planning)
  • to support business cases for change
  • to identify institutions with best practices
  • to learn from better performing institutions
  • to gain access to the executive floor


Key Benchmarking Requirements  

Humility: 

  • others can do some things better

Recognition:

  • learning must be a continuous process
  • learning from others is faster - and therefore smarter - than starting from scratch
  • it's not about getting a good report card
  • measurements are overemphasized, processes (practices) are overlooked
The best organizations today, our organizational role models, are those that use  
benchmarking and use it well. American Productivity and Quality Center


Excuses for Not Benchmarking
  • We're too busy doing projects.
    • ie. We're too busy working hard to learn how to work smart.
  • We participated in a benchmarking survey previously and we're right in the middle of the pack.
    • ie. We're happy to be average
    • ie. Continuous learning is not important
