Folger Shakespeare Library seeks a Building Operating Engineer to manage its facilities. Home to the world's largest Shakespeare collection, Folger Shakespeare Library is a world-class center for scholarship, learning, culture, and the arts. his position manages the Folger Library Facilities Department and is responsible for the appearance and condition of all Folger properties including an historic building and the climate controls that protect an irreplaceable collection of rare books and artifacts. Must have the skills to maintain the operating integrity of all building systems for two buildings as well as providing maintenance services to several residential properties, all within a block radius of the main building. Unique position in an academic and museum-like setting for the right individual. This is a hands-on, senior management position working daily with senior directors of the institution to positively influence the well-being of a national historic building and the many events staged within its walls.
Minimum of 10 years of operational experience with 5 years at a supervisory level or equivalent experience and responsibility with facilities management experience. Advanced computer skills essential with strong technical and problem solving abilities essential.
Primary responsibility is for the efficient management of engineering and maintenance operations and 11 Building Services personnel, ensuring all systems are maintained in first class condition. Building systems include HVAC, water treatment systems, electrical, lighting, plumbing, elevators, energy management, fire protection, structural, and hardware. Must also be organized and disciplined to maintain comprehensive record files consisting of operations and maintenance manuals, permits, contracts, insurance certificates, building drawings and layouts, loss prevention activities, safety training, material safety data and other pertinent documents. Develops and practices emergency operational procedures with staff such as equipment changeover, isolation of electrical and water systems, fire, bomb threat, evacuation, power outages, snow removal, severe weather, etc. Building Services staff are also responsible for event set-ups. This individual may serve on Library committees, task forces, or working groups as needed.
Education and skills needed: accredited technical school, military or college certification in HVAC and operating engineering technologies required, with a minimum of a D.C. 3rd Class Steam Engineer's License or its equivalent. College degree a plus but not required. Knowledge of unique aspects of a historical building and the climate controls necessary for the preservation of art and book collections preferred. Familiarity with OSHA, NEC, NFC and life safety codes, demonstrated knowledge of building systems and components; climate control (HVAC), electrical, plumbing, lighting, emergency power, and structure. Must have technical troubleshooting ability and thorough understanding of material selection, preventative maintenance, and equipment testing. Demonstrated ability in reading blueprints and schematics, including familiarity with grading systems for building components.
