Facilities for Tomorrow: The Future of Facilities in Cultural Institutions

IAMFA members are warmly invited to celebrate IAMFA's 30th anniversary at the inaugural Australian conference this October. 

This year's IAMFA international conference will be held across two cities - the cultural capital of Australia, Melbourne, and the beautiful historic city of Hobart in Tasmania. 

Members are encouraged to extend their trip and join in the free cultural tours of Canberra and Sydney (see Cultural Tours for details) or visit many of Australia's tourist attractions (see Visiting Australia for ideas).

 

Please note that IAMFA 2020 takes place across two cities. The Conference will commence in Melbourne and delegates / guests will be flown from Melbourne to Hobart (the cost of the flight is included in the registration fee). Delegates / guests will need to find their way home from Hobart after the conference.

 Conference Registration

IAMFA members can now register for the 2020 conference. Registration closes Monday, 10 August. 
Please note that the IAMFA Conference is for members and their guests only. You will need to register as a member before you can register for the conference. Please join IAMFA here.

Please note all fees are in USD
The Conference Registration fee covers:
  • Four days of delegate / guest activities including all presentations and tours,
  • Tea/Coffee and lunch each day of the conference,
  • All social events including Welcome Event, Conference Reception, 30th Anniversary Dinner and Gala Dinner, and
  • Your flight from Melbourne to Hobart on 7 October. 

The Conference Registration fee does NOT cover: 

  • Your travel home from Hobart at the end of the conference,
  • Accommodation in either city, or
  • The Benchmarking Workshop (this is a separate event run by Facilities Issues)
  • Travel to and from the cultural tours in Canberra and Sydney.

This year's conference will explore the theme of Facilities for Tomorrow: The Future of Facilities in the Cultural Sector. Over four days, delegates will experience a diverse range of presentations from industry leaders, fellow members and the very best of Melbourne and Hobart's cultural institutions. 

Presenters will be discussing the current issues facing museum facility practitioners, including:

  • The future of museum buildings - Big Data, Smart Buildings, BIM - what does all the jargon mean and how will these initiatives help us to run more efficient and agile facilities?
  • Training our facilities teams to meet the challenges of managing a modern museum.
  • Maintaining world class museum facilities - international case studies and museum best practices.
  • Technology Showcase - innovative and leading-edge technologies to make your work easier.

Delegates will also hear about these exciting current local museum projects:

  • Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation and Reimagining Arts Centre Melbourne (Arts Centre Melbourne)

Cultural Tours

Enjoy a member-led tour of Canberra and Sydney's cultural attractions before or after the conference, and take advantage of free entry to Hobart's premier museums.

The Cultural Tours are free for delegates and guests but you must register to attend:

  • Friday 2 October             Canberra Cultural Tour
  • Monday 12 October        Sydney Cultural Tour 

On the day after the conference, Friday 9 October, delegates and guests can enjoy free entry to the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA).

Travel Information

IAMFA 2020 takes place across two cities - Melbourne and Hobart. The Conference will commence in Melbourne. Delegates / guests will then be flown from Melbourne to Hobart on 7 October (the cost of the flight is included in the registration fee and the flight is approximately one hour). Delegates / guests will need to find their own way home from Hobart after the conference. 

There is not an official conference airline however there are a large range of airlines that fly into Melbourne from every Australian city and most international cities. More details are available on the Melbourne Airport website

Please note that delegates and guests will need to organize their way home from Hobart after the conference. Direct flights from Hobart are available to Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth, with connecting flights to all other Australian and international destinations. Visiting Australia

The conference is taking place in early October, which is the start of spring in Australia. As such the weather may be cool and wet so delegates / guests are encouraged to bring warm and waterproof clothes and shoes.

The average temperature in Melbourne in October is 20 °c / 68 °F

The average temperature in Hobart in October is 17 ° c/ 62 °F

Delegates and guests are encouraged to make the most of their opportunity to spend time in our conference cities, Melbourne and Hobart, and to explore other Australian locations during their stay.
